Round 1 - Peasant

Common Sense League Season 4.1

The round starts January 15th 2011 and will end on February 24th.

Format is Peasant.

Special rules for this round:
Your deck must consist of cards that are listed with a common printing in gatherer, with the exception that you may play 5 cards that only have uncommon printings.
I am banning all cards on the current peasant banlist, and also all cards on the watch list (this will encourage innovation).

Cards allowed: All paper commons. 5 uncommon cards.
Banlist: Any card priced $ 10 or more according to MTGOTraders. (Currently Daze, Force of Will, Strip Mine, possibly others)

Sign me up! I love me some Peasent Also I did not see it in the rules but Peasent goes by paper rarities, example Hymn to Tourach is considered a common in Peasent and Hypnotic Specter is considered an Uncommon in Peasent. Also I am fairly sure that Cranial Plating is no longer banned in Peasent. Not sure if you are going by these rules or not but I thought I would state them in case any members that don't normally play Peasent events would want to play in this round.

OK, to clarify, I am taking the lead from the current pez rules (see here), except to mix things up a bit I am banning everything on the ban and watch lists, including cranial plating. I am happy to go with paper rarities however.

I'm down for this! I've missed the last several leagues but I loooove me some Peasant.

Speaking of which though, that watchlist is painfully inaccurate and I will be updating it right after the Pez season ends on the 16th.

Land Tax has not proven to be anything resembling a problem. It actually opens up some fun decks that wouldn't be playable otherwise, and I'd encourage you to make it legal for the league. It's coming off the watchlist as soon as I get around to updating it.

Fecundity is a card that should be on the watch list because it's a key part of a combo that, with the right hand, could potentially win on turn 1. Considering your goal of keeping this low-power and open, I'd recommend banning it for the league.

Goblin Recruiter combines with other cards (like Goblin Ringleader) for a very powerful aggro assault or just to stack your deck for the rest of the game. While I don't have a problem with the deck in Pez I would put it on the watchlist and I think that given some of the other cards that balance it were pulled it should probably be banned for the league too.

To review: allow Land Tax, ban Fecundity and Goblin Recruiter.

This leaves as potential Tier 1: Burn, Black Disruption, Goblins w/o Recruiter, Grapeshot Storm, Astral Slide, Counterbalance, Affinity Metalcraft w/o Atog or Cranial, and several control variants. There's also a ton of room for tier 2 or rogue stuff, including 2 Girls 1 Cat, WW, Blink, Berserk aggro (infect or stompy), Isochron Scepter, Bloodbraid Aggro, Land Tax/Empyrial Armor, various tribals ...

It should be a great league. I really encourage everyone to experiment too because the field is really open.

Amar, you make some valid points. Land Tax does worry me, primarily because it's a permanent, whereas I wouldn't worry about Gift of Estates which isn't permanent. I imagine you can use it to thin your deck, and to fuel a landfall strategy. I'll trust to your experience though and allow it, unless anyone really objects.

I have no issues with Land Tax. I myself have ran the Land Tax/Emperial Armor deck in a past Pez event and did not dominate with it. Did not do bad with it but I did not win with it either.

I was expecting it to go over $10 and take care of itself, but seeing as it hasn't, I strongly recommend Sinkhole for the banlist. Mono black is plenty strong without it.

Amar, I'm unfamiliar with Pez metagame, so can you provide any more reason why this ought to be banned? On the face of it a one-off land destruction for 2 mana isn't too scary.

Yes, that's because you typed necrosavant not necrosavant543, i'll fix it.
