CommonSense League Season 2010
Introduction As you all know, Common Sense has been running leagues for 2 years now <applause> thank you. In the main we have been getting bigger and better all the time, which is not to say there is no room for improvement. There are going to be a number of improvements, including this page, which is to be your first point of call for the upcoming 2010 season. The Prize Pool The change here is, we're going to reserve 20% of the entry fees for each round. The prize pool created will help us to do several things. Firstly we can award prizes for the winners of the league player of the year and most matches played winner. In addition we can offer rewards to clan members who give their time or services to clan activities. For instance we might pay your entry into a league round if you help organise the leagues or if you recruit an active player to the clan and leagues. It's no secret that your clan would like you all to participate more, and we would like in return to be able to reward you for your involvement, expect to see more about this from Andy soon. The prize payout will look like this: 1st place in round: 40% of tix received 2nd place in round: 20% of tix received 3rd place in round: 10% of tix received 4th place in round: 5% of tix received 5th place in round: 5% of tix received Reserved: 20% of tix received Where possible, extra mystery prizes will be added each round to provide incentives to sign up. I want everyone to be able to play 20 matches, so expect a prize to be unlocked when the magic number Eleven registered players is reached. The Prize Pool Account Sometimes the holder of the prize pool will be unavailable unexpectedly. To get around this I have opened a new Magic online account named norfulthing which will hold the prize pool, and be accessible to the clan officers. The 2010 Schedule of Rounds In the past the scheduling of rounds has been somewhat haphazard. Not good enough. In 2010 the schedule of rounds is going to be laid out in advance. Don't worry, you'll still get to choose the round formats as before. We managed 7 rounds in 2009, and in 2010 we aim to go one better with 8 rounds of 5 weeks each. There are breaks between each round, and long breaks around mid- and end- year. Round | Format | Weeks | Start Date | End Date | Short break | 3.1 | Alara Block | 2-6 | 9 Jan 2010 00:00 | 12 Feb 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.2 | Classic Creature Feature | 8-12 | 20 Feb 2010 00:00 | 26 Mar 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.3 | Classic | 14-18 | 2 Apr 2010 00:00 | 7 May 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.4 | Standard Singleton | 20-24 | 15 May 2010 00:00 | 18 Jun 2010 23:59 | Long break | 3.5 | Sealed Constructed | 28-32 | 10 Jul 2010 00:00 | 13 Aug 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.6 | Standard | 34-38 | 21 Aug 2010 00:00 | 24 Sep 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.7 | BYOS | 40-44 | 2 Oct 2010 00:00 | 5 Nov 2010 23:59 | Short break | 3.8 | Extended | 46-50 | 13 Nov 2010 00:00 | 17 Dec 2010 23:59 | Long break |

Common Rules Section Each round is subject to the following common rules in addition to any special rules such as the format for the round:
Number of matches: | Each player is allowed to play 20 matches in each round, which must be played and reported between the start and end date and times for the round. | Opponent restrictions: | Each player is allowed to play each other player at most twice. | Opponent restrictions when participation is low: | If fewer than 11 players are registered in a round by the end of the 3rd week of competition then you may play a third match against each of the entered players during the remaining two weeks. | Tiebreaker matches: | You may play any number of tiebreaker matches in addition to the normal 2 per player, 20 per round limit. Tie breaker matches score +1 point for a win, -1 point for a loss, with a minimum of zero. Tie breaker points will be used to decide the winner when there is a tie in normal pointsYou are able to play mixed matches with one player earning normal points and the other earning tiebreaker points. This will enable players wanting to complete 20 matches to do so when there aren't enough opponents. | Match settings: | Matches are best 2 of 3, with maximum time (90 minutes). All matches must be watchable. | Card restrictions: | All cards must have a common printing in the format being played. Proxies may be used. Cranial Plating is banned in all pauper formats. | Reporting match results: | Either give the result to JMason, Wildman4420 or AndyMC1, who will update the round result post for you,or post your result on the forum thread for the round where it will be seen by the league organiser. As a suggestion to keep things tidy, you can make a single results post, adding new results to the same post by editing. An admin will strikeout your original results to indicate they have been copied to the main resiults post. Please post results in the form winning player name, games won, games lost, losing player name, e.g. izzet guildmage 2-1 jmason. | Round Scoring: | Your score has two parts, the total number of games won and the total number of games lost. Players are ranked by descending order of games won, then within that by ascending order of games lost and finally by ascending number of matches played. In this way a score of 20-2 would beat a score of 20-3, but they would both lose to 21-10. A person with fewer matches than another on the same points will place higher. | Season Scoring: | Season points are earned by finishing in the top 8 of each round. 8 points are earned for first place, then 7 for second and so on down to 1 point for eighth. | Disputes: | In the unlikely event of disputes, they will be decided by the current league organiser, JMason. Should a mutually satisfactory resolution not be possible then the clan captains will make a final decision. Anyone involved in a dispute will not be allowed to rule on the resolution. | Penalties: | Anyone who has not paid their entry fee for a round will be ineligible for prizes, and any prize that would have been won will pass down to the next eligible player. This includes any event tickets, other prize picks, and season points. |

| As reluctant as I am to change any rules mid-round, we clearly are not going to be able to play 20 matches in round 3.2 unless we magically find 3 more players. The way I am going to tackle this is to say that if we have fewer than 11 players entered in a round by the end of the 3rd week of competition then you may play a third match against each of the entered players during the remaining two weeks.
For round 3.2, the creature feature, you may play the additional matches starting from the 13th March 2010.
Hope that helps, JM.
p.s. I'd rather get more names signed up, so please everyone, try to get clan members who have not yet joined to sign up.

| Round 3.3 now goes into the 3rd match rule. Sad Panda. I'm going to make this a permanent rule for 2010. | |

| We have a slight scheduling issue looming. The next core set release (2011) is right in the middle of round 3.5, and the next expansion set (lights) clashes with round 3.7. This means I have to shake up my schedule for the rest of the year, and abandon some format votes, sorry.
I am going run the Standard Pauper format in round 3.6 so that we dodge the set releases, and get the full benefit of 2 complete blocks for the round.
For the same reason I will run the extended format in round 3.8.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

| I've updated the rules with a new section for penalties, which is something I do very reluctantly, but am forced to do by the reluctance of some players to pay their league entry fees. On balance it does not help the league to prevent these players from playing, so instead the penalty for non-payment is loss of prizes, including any event tickets, other prize picks, and season points. | |

| Season standings updated after round 3.7.
And the shock news is that Chrismh only managed 4th place in this round, slipping back by 3 season points, failing to sew up the title early. So we go into the last round, pauper extended, with JMason still in with a chance to win consecutive seasons, if he can finish 4 places ahead of Chrismh! Sure. lol

| You'll spot that the final standings for 2010 are up, and barring mistakes we know who is league champion 2010, chrismh77, well done that man. He also carries off the rookie of the year title. Yours truly gets the participation prize, somehow edging the wildman out of his traditional spot. Well done everyone. I am writing up a season report, which I will publish next week, and where I will announce the prizes. Thank you all for making this another terrific year in the common sense league. | |
